Update on Special Election


To the Voters of the City of Cleveland, Georgia, the following have qualified as candidates for the position of Council Member ward 2 for the Municipal Special Election to be held May 19, 2020:

 The Special Election will be held May 19, 2020.

On March 14, 2020 Georgia Secretary of State Raffensperger postponed the presidential primary scheduled for March 24, 2020.  The new election date is May 19, 2020.  The change in the election date is due to Governor Kemp declaring a Public Health State of Emergency (declaration)

Statement from Secretary of State Elections Division

In accordance to the City of Cleveland's Code of Ordinances, the city follows the same guidelines as the State of Georgia Election Code Title 21.2 et seq and has followed suit with the state in postponing the special election for mayor.  The election will be held May 19, 2020 at First Baptist Church of Cleveland. 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. in conjunction with the presidential primary.


Notice is hereby given that, in accordance with O.C.G.A. §21-2-540, a special election shall be held in Cleveland, Georgia for the purpose of submitting to the voters the opportunity to vote to fill the vacant seat for the position of Council Member Ward 2 of the City of Cleveland. 

The special election will be held Tuesday, May 19, 2020. 

All persons who are not registered to vote and who desire to register to vote in the special election may register to vote through the close of business on Monday, April 20, 2020 at the White County Registrar’s Office 1241 Helen Hwy, Ste. 210-A, Cleveland GA 30528. 

Advanced voting will be held at Cleveland City Hall, 85 S. Main St. Cleveland GA 30528 April 27, 2020 through May 15, 2020 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m..

 Polls will open from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. on election day (May 19, 2020).
The State of Georgia Elections Division is encouraging ALL registered voters to apply for a ballot to be mailed to your home to help in the efforts of social distancing during this election period.  The Secretary of State's office has mailed out applications.  If you have not received an application, please click on the following link:  Absentee Ballot Application

If you are a White County resident/voter, please mail your completed absentee ballot application to

County Registrar, Ms. Lisa Manning, will insure you receive a paper ballot for the May 19, 2020 Election to include all county, state, and federal elections.  Ms. Manning will forward absentee applications to the city so that city residents will receive an absentee ballot for the office of mayor and council member seat ward 2.
